A Commitment to Diversity

Lois Goodman details her activity in the legal community

According to Juan Espinosa, Corporations look to minority businesses for innovation and diversity.

Why the large Fortune 50 companies look to McElroy as explained by Edward Deutsch.

MDM&C has always been a strong supporter of diversity in the practice of law. We are an equal opportunity employer and the firm makes its hiring decisions without discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, nationality of any individual, age, marital status, civil union status, domestic partnership status, genetic information, sex, affect ional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability or atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait of any individual, the liability for service in the Armed Forces of the United States, or because of the refusal to submit to genetic tests or make available the results of a genetic test.

The firm participates in the Justice Robert L. Clifford Fellowship program, which was established in 1996 in honor of the former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice to benefit minority students at Seton Hall University School of Law. In addition, the Firm has participated in the Partners in Excellence Program, whereby it contributes toward full scholarships for six minority students at the law school. In these ways, the Firm hopes to advance its efforts to recruit and retain attorneys of diverse backgrounds.

MDM&C is proud to salute our Partner, Karen J. Mathis, who is the Immediate Past President of the American Bar Association. Ms. Mathis has been active in the American Bar Association for more than 25 years. She served as Chair of the Commission on Women in the Profession from 1997 - 2000. She was the Association's second highest officer, Chair of its House of Delegates, from July 2000 until August 2002. She served as Chair of the 30,000 member ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section in 2002-2003; Chair of the Commission on Women in the Profession from 1997 to 2000; and Chair of the Standing Committee on Membership from 1994 to 1997.

Our Partner, Lois Goodman was honored as the 2004 recipient of the Themis Award by the DuPont Women Lawyers Network, for furthering the goals of that network to promote women in the practice of law.

As chair of the Health and Disability Insurance Law Committee, Randi Knepper, a Partner in the Firm, was commended by the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association in August of 2004 for exceptional effort and effectiveness in promoting and achieving greater participation and involvement of women in the activities of the Committee and the Section.

In June of 2003 our colleague, Vimal Shah, received the J. Michael Brown Award for commitment to diversity at DuPont Legal’s sixth annual Minority Counsel Network Conference. Vim currently serves as President of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association.

The Firm is pleased to advise that it currently has 222 attorneys, 29% of which are female and between 7% and 8% of which constitute other types of minorities pursuant to the United States government standards.

Our Firm’s mission is to provide innovative legal services of exceptional value and superior quality in a way that fosters minorities and women in the profession and in the service of our clients.
